We collect all incoming, individual customer orders and order one time in month in Portugal directly from our friendly manufacturer, who then produces your own barrel for you. o Treatment: Raw on the outside (natural and untreated for optimal gas exchange for the distillate to breathe), lightly toasted inside = burnt out (so no wax film, your distillate comes into direct contact with the oak wood).
o Recommendation: if you will use the barrel mainly for storing and distilling your distillate, configure your barrel either with a metal tap or without a tap hole for the following reason: tap hole with the use of a wooden tap is a risk, the tap hole can be leak, since wood taps with time have a weak point (such as dripping, leaking at the hole in case of incorrect installation, must continue to be pursued). Of course, you can fill out your distillate from the bunghole, thus avoiding leakage and distillate loss.
o Advantage of toasting: The alcohol in the barrel serves as a solvent and absorbs the flavors of the wood (such as vanillin, syringaldehyde). As a result, the content changes significantly in terms of taste, color, smell, alcohol content, maturity, etc. This process is desired by winemakers / distillers, because to experiment and meet a personal, individual favorite. The degree of toasting whether lightly (= standard), medium or heavily toasted often depends on the contents of what the customer wants to fill.
o Ideal for filling, storing, maturing, changing and tapping of wine, spirits, brandy, whiskey. Also suitable for beer.
o Attention: please note the small but fine details of our barrel. The two outer rings are deliberately not plan with the wooden ring, but deliberately over a few millimeters over the wood - for the following reason: if the barrel is placed to a damp cellar floor (without stand), thereby avoid that the wood is not directly in contact with the ground and thus unpleasant moisture / dirt can reach the wood.

o The barrels are made from French oak in Portugal by experienced craftsmen by hand. The craftmen uses the so-called pedunculate oak, which has a slower and even growth with narrower annual rings. French oak is more expensive to buy than other woods, but has the advantage that the flavor intensity is particularly pronounced. Not every wood is suitable for a barrel and is sorted out by the craftsmen.
o From the first step to the last, starting with the selection of the wood to the final test, you can expect from the Portuguese manufacturer a precise craft and thus a high quality barrel that will meet your needs.
o The art of cooperage has been passed on and refined to descendants within the family for more than 100 years. The Portuguese manufacturer has a wealth of experience in barrel production, which will later play an important role for the distillate to be added.
o Since it is a natural raw material, different grains are possible. The wood was untreated outside and inside therefore you have to accept wood typical features such as branches, slight indentations, grains and natural discolorations count, but this is not a quality defect of the barrel. There is no 100% perfect wood without any small flaws. If there were this wood, the price would not be affordable. Please only buy if you are aware of it. The manufacturer in Portugal checks every barrel before the goods issue, so that there will be no problems later.

o Advantage over taps made of wood: wood taps should be replaced after years, because the friction during winding and turning can cause heavy losses over time and therefore dribble, which is absolutely normal because wood is a natural product (this natural process is not a defect in the wood tap). With the metal faucet there is not this problem he holds almost unlimited in careful treatment. If you store badly sugary substances in the barrel, we recommend our metal tap, because the wood tap stuck here quickly.

o As in the past like the traditional marketender, we assemble you on your small 1 L or 2 L or 3 liter barrel, two beautiful eyelets, ready fixed on the barrel top, on both sides in a line to the bunghole. This gives you the opportunity to hang your little barrel around your shoulder/neck. Due to the weight maximum possility is a filled 3 liter barrel, so please choose this variant only if you order a 1L or 2L or 3L barrel. If you order this version for larger volumes >5L we put the two eyelets loose in your parcel, not fixed and you can decide self on your risk how to use it.

o Important: we burn the engraving directly into the wood, monochrome. Easily possible are letters, numbers, texts and special characters in your desired font. Hard to engrave are extremely elaborate images with the finest lines / shades / barely recognizable content, etc. NOT possible are colored content. Please note that each barrel has different grains / structures / characteristics in the wood, as wood is a natural raw material. This special feature is then reflected in the engraving, it is not 100% uniformly homogeneous / even layer painted but the engraving is burned into the wood.
